Nests and pests in the gutters
Photo to come
What it looks like
- Twigs, grass or nesting material packed into the gutter.
- Birds or squirrels going in and out at the roof edge.
- Insects around a gutter that holds standing water.
What causes it
- Animals love to build nests — birds, squirrels, mice — and you don’t want your gutter to be the one they pick.
- Gutters left open are a nesting site.
- A gutter that holds standing water brings mosquitoes.
What it leads to
- A nest blocks the gutter like any other debris. It only takes a leaf and a stick to block a gutter and have that gutter fill with water.
- When a gutter overflows, it also backflows — water goes backward toward the house, not just over the front.
- Backflow wets the fascia board. Depending on how much water, it works its way into the roof decking and migrates upward.
How we fix it
- Close the gutter off. The Valor Gutter Guard keeps out birds, squirrels, mice and insects, and helps prevent bug and pest infestations.
- Before the gutter business, I worked for Terminix.
